Popular radio show has Bird No1 on film and awards stories … here (if you want to go straight to the broadcast from 1.07)
SAILESH RAM, editor of www.asianculturevulture.com was on the Sunny & Shay show on BBC Radio London last night (February 12) talking about entertainment stories – and the Superbowl, which started as the programme was running.
As well as talking about the cultural significance of the half-time entertainment spot given to Rihanna this year, the trio also talked about the Brit Awards which took place on Saturday evening (February 11) in London and Harry Styles four awards there.
And then the conversation broadened out also to the Grammys and Beyonce’s apparent failure to win Album of the Year Award (‘Renaissance’), which went to Styles this year for ‘Harry’s House’. She won four other awards – R&B song, Dance Recording, Traditional R&B performance and Dance/Electronic Album.
The show began with Sunny asking Ram about interviewing ‘Joyland‘ director Saim Sadiq, whom the radio presenter couple had talked to just before Ram was on air. Sadiq revealed that he contracted covid during Cannes and Ram joked* that, “Now I know where I got it.” (See the acv interview in Cannes – https://youtu.be/ie-OEFAKkhQ). ‘Joyland‘ opens on February 24 in the UK. ACV also has an interview with the central couple in the movie – Ali Junejo and Rasti Farooq coming soon to Youtube and the site – Subscribe/follow and don’t miss this interview!).
Ram did go onto say that his covid was mild and that he had been very anxious about the disease – having lost an older sister to the virus in early 2021.
Regular readers and viewers will know that Cannes 75 (Cannes in 2022) was the channel’s return to the international festival circuit in person after the covid hiatus.
They talked about ‘Joyland‘, and then Shekhar Kapur’s latest film, ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ – which is a stylish and culturally aware romantic comedy and which acv reviewed after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, giving it a **** rating out of five review. You can see acv’s interviews with Kapur, Jemima Khan (writer-executive producer) and stars Lily James and Shezad Latif here and on our Youtube channel.
It shouldn’t be forgotten that Kapur started his working life as an accountant and then management consultant in London – he got emotional at the Eastern Eye Arts, Culture and Theatre Awards on February 3, when presenting the top prize of Outstanding Contribution to the Creative Industries award given to Nitin Sawhney whose musical score alongside pop producer and star Naughty Boy, graces the film. You can see our interview with Sawhney and Naughty Boy here. (See the link below for the story).
The three also talked about the Telugu language film, ‘RRR’ with Shay explaining how the title came about (using the names of the director and two stars – SS Rajamouli and Ram Charan and NT Rama Rao Jnr).
Ram predicted ‘Naatu Naatu’ winning in the song category at the Oscars and Shay said how much she loved the film.

*It isn’t by any means certain Ram got covid from that interview with Sadiq – a bunch of people that the acv team mixed with also got covid (mildly) after returning from Cannes and Ram’s illness was nine days after returning from Cannes and he attended a large theatre premiere in London two days before testing positive on The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Celebrations on Friday, June 3.
He also stood in at short notice for a guest who had to pull out because of family illness.
