Sunny’s Oscar predictions 2016 – the big verdict!

Oscar’s night is a big one for our film columnist as we look back on how well he did…

OUR FILM columnist is back and was shaking it up last night as Sunny – one half of the BBC broadcasting team that is Sunny and Shay (his wife) – live tweeted during the Oscars ceremony.

For the third year running on www.asianculturevulture.com, the film buff who returns to the site with his regular column, after a hiatus in late 2015, put his head on the metaphorical chopping block and predicted who would win an Oscar, and in some cases, who should win an Oscar.

Strictly speaking he called right on 50 per cent of his predictions – which is not bad on a night of some surprises!

On the Best Picture award, he wanted “Spotlight” to win but predicted “The Revenant” would get the Oscar. He was wrong – “Spotlight” won Best Picture, its only win of the evening. We can give him a half-point there.

On another two, he was close but not close enough.

He wanted Sylvester Stallone to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his part in “Creed” where he returns as the iconic boxer, Rocky Balboa, but the Oscar went to Brit Mark Rylance for “Bridge of Spies“. Remember the original “Rocky” movie in 1976, picked up three Oscars, but there was to be no nostalgia ride the veteran star who made his name with “Rocky“.

Equally surprisingly, Alicia Vikander took home the Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her part in “The Danish Girl”, when Rooney Mara was universally regarded as a shoo-in for “Carol” and was Sunny’s choice too in this category.

Elsewhere on the main awards, his Oscar antennae was as sharp as glass…

He got the best director Oscar – spot on with Alejandro González Iñárritu for “The Revenant“.

Of course, one of the global headlines today is that finally, Leonardo DiCaprio has an Oscar. After six nominations, he finally got to take home an award for Best Actor and in Sunny’s words, “he deserves it – he is an amazing actor for our time and he should be recognised for that”. Sunny is a big fan, and loved his turn last year in “Wolf of Wall Street”, which he thought was deserving of an Oscar but it went to Eddie Redmayne for “The Theory of Everything“.

He was right about Brie Larson – she won the award for best actress in a leading role, just as Sunny had predicted.

He called it correctly also on Best Documentary Feature for Amy, made by Londoner Asif Kapadia, collecting his very first Oscar.

He predicted “Inside Out” winning and it did, despite personally feeling the love for “Anomolisa”.

So we make that 5/8, though with the best picture – it is 6/8 or at least 5.5/8. Well done, Sunny. Look forward to catching him on the latest film releases in the UK here on www.asianculturevulture.com
