See rising star in new opera in Wales…
UP COMING opera tenor and western classical singer Sandeep Gurrapadi talks to www.asianculturevulture.com about his latest starring role in the new opera, ‘Silver Spoon’ which has its premiere at the Beamauris Festival (June 30-July 4) in Wales on Friday, July 1.
‘A Silver Spoon’ is a new opera which charts the love affair between Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed – with Gurrapadi playing Fayed. The story has two East End gangsters who are keen to get their hands on Princess Diana’s jewellery – just as the couple are in the throes of a passionate new relationship. (See the festival website for more). Lisa Logan is the composer, while David Peimer is the librettist.
Gurrapadi has already performed all over the world and talks about his journey from being born in the US, returning to India, deferring his studies in biotechnology – and attending AR Rahman’s Conservatoire in Chennai and then breaking into Opera and classical singing professionally.
Highly rated, he is based currently in the UK as he is a completing a music Ph.d at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama – but will be in India for July, running workshops for the Royal Opera House of Mumbai and performing recitals in Art Song Festival of India alongside Soprano and artistic director Nina Kanter across cities in India.
