INDIA’S most revered singer – Lata Mangeshkar – known as the country’s nightingale – passed away earlier today (Sunday, February 6). She was 92, and many of her songs made Bollywood what it is today and tributes have been paid from far and wide.
The country is in a deep state of mourning – she is getting a state funeral and there are two days of official mourning.Mumbai will observe a public holiday in her memory tomorrow. She had been awared the Bharat Rana – India’s highest civilian award and both the President and Prime Minister offered their deepest condolences and paid very warm tributes.
Her funeral is taking place currently. India’s prime minister Narendra Modi has just arrived in Mumbai from New Delhi for it where large crowds have gathered to pay their respects.
She had been admitted to hospital for more than a week and had tested positive for covid; there had been a slight improvement in her condition earlier this week but she was put back on a ventilator yesterday but continued to deteriorate.
