IFFI and Film Bazaar – our video interviews: Tim McGovern (VFX Oscar winner), Ivan Ayr (Soni), Chaitanya Prasad (IFFI director), Samir Bhamra (UK Asian Film Festival), Imthias Mohammed (Lakshawadeep Tourism)

Our video interviews from this festival all on one page!

IN NOVEMBER 2018, we were at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI – November 20-28) which takes place in Goa annually and was marking its 49th edition last year,

As part of our coverage of the festival, we also popped over to Film Bazaar, which is the trade arm of IFFI (known at some festivals, as the market).

Our videos are split between our Youtube and Facebook Channels.

Our Youtube we have interviews with Tim McGovern, who won an Oscar for the visual effects on ‘Total Recall’ (1991). He was one of its pioneers and continues to be one of the medium’s leading lights working on Christopher Nolan’s visually stunning, ‘Dunkirk’ (2017). He spoke to us at IFFI, after talking about the state of the industry in a special press meet about the impact of visual effects and India’s place in it, with writer and film enthusiast and entrepreneur, and moderator on the day, Bhuvan Lall. McGovern is currently based in Mumbai and heads up Indian VFX firm, Double Negative.

Ivan Ayr may not be a known name in the film world quite yet – but that is likely to change as more folks see his very impressive debut feature, ‘Soni’.
It enjoyed a world premiere in Venice in 2018 and came to London Film Festival, where we saw it.
Written in the aftermath of the Delhi rape horror, Ayr focuses on policewoman, ‘Soni’ and the particular pressures she faces as a woman trying to uphold the law and provide protection and safety to all, including vulnerable women, with whom she identifies. The film was made available on Netflix on Friday (January 18). We caught up with him at Film Bazaar, where he was involved in the knowledge series (a series of panels bringing prominent figures together to discuss issues – his panel discussed violence in India and why as filmmakers they wanted to tackle it). Based outside India for many years, he has now returned to the country of his birth and is working on new films from there.

Chaitanya Prasad is the director of IFFI and told us that preparations are already under way for the 50th edition of the festival, which will take place later this year. He spoke to us about the festival’s wide remit and the challenges of running it.

Samir Bhamra, the creative director of the UK Asian Film Festival (once known as Tongues of Fire and the London Asian Film Festival) talked to us about what he was doing at Film Bazaar, the trade part of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI 49).
