Bansali is one of the prominent directors working in India and widely regarded as an exceptional auteur – so to be cast in a film by him is a distinct badge of honour for any aspiring actor. The film also features Bollywood star Ajay Devgn in a cameo role and Vijay Raaz, another well-known film actor.
Bhatt plays Gangubai, a woman who starts out her working life in the infamous red light district of Kamathipura in Mumbai but ends up wielding power and influence and the film, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ charts her journey and is loosely adapted from the stories in the book, ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ by the author, Hussain Zaidi.
