Cannes 2021 – ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’: film about woman medical professor in Bangladesh packs a punch (video review)…

Selected to have its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section in Cannes (only Competition is higher if you consider it to be a hierarchy)…

ALMOST certainly the first film from Bangladesh to feature as an official selection in the Uncertain Regard section is ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’.
It opened this section in Cannes on Wednesday, July 6 (see below please) and ACV’s Brigitte Leloire Kerackian was there to watch it.
About a woman medical professor – ‘Rehana Maryam Noor’ (played by Azmeri Haque Badhon) the film written and directed by Abdullah Mohammad Saad, charts the immense pressures Noor faces in the workplace, at home, adjudicating students’ work and raising a young daughter herself – just two of the constant demands made on her.
Her already complicated life becomes yet more difficult when a student is raped and she is asked to keep quiet…
