Bollywood stars Katrina Kaif and Vicky Kaushal: Back to Mumbai and work after fairy-tale wedding in Royal Rajasthan…

Celebrity Bollywood wedding has India agog..

By Mamie Colfox

THEY married in a lavish wedding ceremony last week that has been the talk of India ever since – but they chose different ways to mark a new chapter in their lives together today (Monday, December 13).

Bollywood megastar Katrina Kaif posted a picture of herself and her six sisters from her wedding to fellow Bollywood star Vicky Kaushal. She told her 59 million Instagram followers earlier this morning: “Growing up, we sisters always protected each other. They are my pillars of strength and we keep each other grounded…May it always stay that way.”

She is pictured in her wedding Lengha surrounded by those sisters, who appear to be performing phoolon ki chaadar – a bridal entrance that normally sees a bride escorted to the wedding mandap by her brothers. In Kaif’s case, her sisters: Stephanie, Christine, Natacha, Melissa, Sonia and Isabell, do the honours. There are also another set of five pictures in the same feed post.

Kaushal, slightly later than his wife, announced to his 11.7 million followers on Instagram that two leading actors had been signed up to star alongside him in the Meghna Gulzar directed film, ‘Sam Bahadur’ – a biopic about Sam Manekshaw, one of India’s most decorated soldiers and a hero of the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. Kaushal will portray Manekshaw.

Kaushal said on Instagram: “It’s a very special day for us we celebrate our director @meghnagulzar’s birthday and welcome the leading ladies @sanyamalhotra_ as Siloo Manekshaw & @fatimasanashaikh as Smt Indira Gandhi’.

Kaif and Kaushal were reported to have moved into their new plush Juhu sea-facing home in Mumbai earlier today. Kaif is among the most highly paid women leads in Bollywood and has a 10 year plus career at the top, while her new husband has always been a highly regarded actor and has broken into the top echeleons of Bollywood more recently.

Both have busy work schedules and reports of a Maldives honeymoon were laid to rest as the two flew back to Mumbai on Friday evening (December 10).

The couple were married in a three-day-long celebration including haldi, sangeet and mehendi ceremonies, tying the knot on December 9 in Rajasthan at the luxurious Six Senses Fort Barwara. The couple both posted photos of their haldi celebration on their Instagram accounts, with the caption: “Shukr. Sabir. Khushi” (gratitude, patience, happiness).

In one photograph, Vicky and Katrina are shown applying turmeric onto each other’s faces as they happily rejoice, whilst in another, Kaushal’s father does the same to him. The sangeet was a big, musical affair with special guest performances and Kaif dancing to some of her hits down the years.

In another shared post from their wedding day, they say: “Only love and gratitude in our hearts for everything that brought us to this moment. Seeking all your love and blessings as we begin this new journey together.”

Kaif dazzled in a traditional Sabayasachi red bridal lehenga which is reported to have cost £17,000.

She also wore bespoke jewellery including matha patti, a gold choker, statement bangles and her Tiffany & Co engagement ring, also reportedly worth thousands.

Kaushal wore an embroidered ivory silk sherwani, with iconic Sabyasachi handmade gold plated Bengal Tiger buttons. He completed his look with a silk tissue safa and statement necklace studded with emeralds, diamonds, quartz and tourmalines in 18 karat gold from Sabyasachi Heritage Jewellery.

The wedding guest list was strictly limited and kept tight due to the covid situation and unvaccinated guests were asked to asked to take compulsory PCR tests before arrival.

Amongst the high-profile celebrities invited to the wedding were: Sharvari Wagh, Radhika Madan, Malavika Mohanan, Kabir Khan, Mini Mathur, Gurdas Maan, and Vijay Krishna Acharya.

All the photos to date from the wedding have been released on the stars’ own social media platforms and guests were reportedly asked not to take pictures.

Most of the Indian media focused on filming other stars as they left Mumbai or arrived in Jaipur before undertaking the two-and a half-hour road trip to the wedding venue. Kaif was reported to have taken residence in a special section of the hotel with its own private pool and facilities. The venue is a former palace and is run by IHG Hotels and Resorts.

Kaif and Kaushal’s relationship was kept pretty much under wraps until last week. They had never talked publicly about their romance or closeness.

Kaif is set to appear in ‘Tiger 3’ in one of India’s biggest franchise action films alongside megastar Salman Khan; ‘Phone Bhoot’, described as a horror comedy alongside Siddhant Chaturvedi, Ishaan Khatter; and appear in ‘Jee Le Zaraa’ – a road movie with fellow stars, Priyanka Chopra, and Alia Bhatt. The film has echoes of the successful guy road trip movie, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’ (ZNMD) in which Farhan Akhtar starred and is now set to direct this. Kaif had a part as a love interest in ‘ZNMD’.

Kaif can be seen in the current release, ‘Sooryavanshi’; while Kaushal talked to acv’s Natalie Barrass about his latest film, Udham Singh’.

Kaif was born in Hong Kong and lived in London before getting into modelling first and then heading to Bollywood. Her mother is English and her father is reportedly of Kashmiri origin and divorced Kaif’s mother when she was young. Sister Isabelle Kaif has appeared in Bollywood films.

Kaushal started his acting career in the Indian independent film sector and acv first met him in Cannes when the Anurag Kashyap directed film, ‘Raman Raghav’ premiered there in 2016.
