‘Turning Red’ – Writer-director Domee Shi and Disney Pixar producer Lindsey Collins talk red pandas, Chinese culture and Toronto…(video)

Animated film is released today by Disney Pixar…and will go to its OTT platform this month…

IN the latest release from Disney Pixar, ‘Turning Red’, writer-director Domee Shi and producer Lindsey Collins tell us what made them want to make this animated film.
Set in Toronto – as they discuss in the video – it charts the story of Meillin Lee (Rosalie Chiang), a precocious academic 13-yeard-old who has an established group of friends that includes Priya (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) .
Much of the movie centres around Meillin’s – Mei to her friends – relationship with her slightly dominant mother played by Sandra Oh.
As with any 13-year-old there are powerful emotions for Mei – and when she gets emotional, she finds herself turning into a giant red panda.
A coming of age tale then with a difference!
