Sunny Grewal’s April-May film watch

May 21 2015

Sunny (above left) and his wife (Sunny and Shay) are on BBC West Midlands 95.6FM between 2-4pm, every Monday to Thursday. Be sure to listen in. It’s here.
You can continue to hear the couple on their signature BBCLondon94.9FM show every Sunday between 6pm-8pm. It’s here
.

APOLOGIES for the delay, but we’re back on track with a double whammy – looking back at the films in April and what to see in May (Superheroes rule!) and what this month is all about…

What are the films to watch this month, first…

There are many trailers out there but there is only ONE film…and it’s “The Avengers – Age of Ultron”. I have not looked at any other trailers – they have had me entertained all this time. And I can’t wait to watch
this film…

Age of Ultron trailer

So a week after it came out and only because it was the first time I could actually get away to the cinema…If you’re a fan of big budget in your face films, you are going to love this. This is not a Michael Bay action film without a story, this complements – and is better than – the first – we get straight into the action and there were so many characters that were thrown into this and it still didn’t feel crowded.
It didn’t feel like there were too many superheroes in the film, they all have the right amount of screen time according to their stories. The only person who was ‘shooed in’ and if he wasn’t in the film, it wouldn’t have mattered, was Samuel Jackson as Detective Fury.
This gets five shields – and the only thing I didn’t like about this film is that there wasn’t enough Hulk. I am sorry, I am a big fan and I wanted more Hulk, but the Hulk battle with Iron Man was BOOM, just watch it
for that. And it really does set us up for next month…
Sunny rating: Five shields

What I recommended you to see last month…

thetaleoftheprincesskaguyaadjThe Tale of the Princess Kayuga” – It was my film of the month. It’s frustrating me that it did not win an Oscar, it should have done (the best animated feature went instead to “Big Hero 6”). It’s just one of the best you can see. These guys (Ghibli, the animation house) are constantly bringing animation to the highest level. I am still upset about it not getting the Oscar, it is such a superior film.
It’s about princess born from a bamboo shoot and born to a woodsman. The film is about young woman’s aspirations and her coming of age and wanting to be young and free and having to conform to society.
Such a beautiful film and it is everything that Disney isn’t and yet it is…it gives you that nice glowing feeling at the end. It’s based on Japanese and Buddhist mythology which I really love. The animation they use is brilliant. It is familiar and not – you can see the pencil drawings and it is one of the most beautiful things you can see. Please go and watch it in the cinema. You don’t need to see it on the big screen though, the beauty of this studio is that their stories engross you and you can watch it on any platform. These guys know animation and how to make good movies.
Sunny rating: Five stars

get hardadjGet Hard” – The trailer had it all and I have to say the trailer didn’t have all the best bits. Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart make a really good partnership. I would not be surprised if they come back for another round in a future project. It was funny, ridiculous and Ferrell is a genius when it comes down to it, by far. In this he is hilarious and Hart brings something else to it. You know you are ridiculous when you look at someone
and they are but it’s not like in “Anchorman” where they’re all ridiculous – there isn’t anyone in that to say, ‘you are stupid’. And in this, the Hart character says you are stupid but I am going to take advantage of this.
It’s a really good film, I am going to give it three cane rows.
Sunny rating: Five cane rows

cindarellaadjCinderella” – It was okay, it wasn’t a classic, but one of my friends and a friend from the BBC London
94.9FM show (and a fellow Londoner), Sonna Rele did one of the songs for it and I was very proud to hear her voice on the sound track and that enhanced the film for me. Disney did well. My nephew didn’t like it so much, but my niece definitely liked it. It’s a girlie film.
Sunny film rating: Two Shoes

These films are available on many platforms and discover a world of animation by Studio Ghibli…and you will fall in love with it!
