REGARDED by many as the greatest Urdu language writer of the last century, Sadaat Hasan Manto came into special focus here earlier today.

A biopic on his life has made it into the second most important section of the Cannes Film Festival – the Un Certain Regard banner and one down only from the Competition category and those glitzy Red Carpet jamborees.

This morning, director Nandita Das presented her ‘Manto’ to the world for the very first time. With rising name Nawazuddin Siddiqui playing the lead part, there is much anticipation in India and abroad, about this film.

Das, who is well-known here at Cannes – she has served on the jury, has been preparing for this moment for some time… in 2015 she talked to acv here at Cannes about raising money for her film. She was here also last year doing the same thing as she looked to complete her project.

Earlier this year, both she and Siddiqui packed out the main lawn at the Jaipur Literature Festival talking about Manto and his rich legacy.

We will have more on Manto soon – stay tuned!
