Cannes 2021: ‘Ahed’s Knee’ – anti-war film explores personal and political dislocations…

Nadav Lapid is one of Israel’s most innovative young filmmakers and his latest film, Ha’berech is hard-hitting and unsentimental and featured in the competition section…

DESCRIBED as an anti-war film Israeli writer-director Nadav Lapid’s Cannes Film Festival Competition 2021 entry, ‘Ahed’s Knee’ or ‘Ha’Berech’ is a subtle exploration of emotions and a complex play between two characters.
One is, perhaps, intriguingly autobiographical, as the film revolves around a filmmaker who goes to a countryside screening of his film in Israel and ‘befriends’ the festival director and cultural officer in that region.
The film examines themes of censorship, conscription, activism and how society changes when there is a long-running conflict that is both hidden and explicitly experienced.
