No other ‘Asian’ awards ceremony achieved the level of media attention that the Asian Awards did and most went with Zayn Malik’s comments about his fellow former One Directioners but we noticed something else…
WHEN you get not one, but two megastars at the same event, you are asking for trouble.
We probably should have known better but it was part of the allure – boy band sensation, Zayn Malik (ZM), who has just split from the band that made his name, One Direction and…
Shah Rukh Khan (SRK), India’s no1 contemporary movie star and often compared to Tom Cruise in terms of commercial success and longevity.
The twitter picture of them together was sweet and went quickly viral and Malik’s award acceptance speech (for outstanding achievement in music) displayed an expected maturity and touching identification.
Great, he’s still mates with the other Directioners and they gave him a lifetime’s worth of memories.
That was reported as the main news (in the ‘main-stream’) but what really struck home (to us) was something quite different.
In his soft Yorkshire accent, he said (in full): “I am not a guy for many words normally and I have to say thank you this.
“It’s incredibly humbling to accept an award on the same stage as some people that I have looked up to throughout my entire life, iconic people such as Shah Rukh Khan, and to be given this award by one of my best friends, Naughty Boy, was also an amazing thing.
“Tonight is about thanks – I want to thank God for allowing me to do what my dreams were.
“I’d like to thank my mum and dad for making me Asian (ripples of laughter) and allowing me…thank you (responding to the laughs)…to have some sort of effect on the Asian community. It’s a massive honour.
“I’d also like to take this moment to thank four of the best guys I ever met while being in the band and doing all the amazing things that I did and some of things that we did will stay with me for the rest of my life and I thank you for that and yeah… thank you very much for everything.”
Lovely, sincere, natural.
Those who enjoy such success rarely shout about their Asianness and often appear ready to shed that skin as soon as someone suggests it’s better for their career to keep quiet about (any of) that. It was refreshing and important and gave some inkling of why ‘Asian’ awards can boost self-confidence and inspire.
It appeared to be the high point of the evening and who could deny him?
The presence of ZM and SRK rather overshadowed the awards themselves. Here is the full list of winners…
