BAFTA nominations: Sandhya Suri’s ‘The Field’ makes shortlist – and other notable nominations

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) announced which films and talent are up for awards…

SANDHYA SURI’S ‘The Field’ has been nominated for a BAFTA in the short film category.

Sandhya Suri

It has already has one high profile award – the best short film at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2018, winning $10,000.

It also played at the London Film Festival a month later.

Suri’s 19-minute film covers rare territory – the emotions of an Indian female farm worker who is having an affair. It is a UK-French production.

The Freddie Mercury biopic, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ directed by Bryan Singer and starring US (Egyptian origin) Rami Malek, scored well getting six.

Malek who was awarded a Golden Globe on Sunday (January 6) appears in the best leading actor category.

Spike Lee’s ‘BlacKkKlansman’ has five nominations – the tale about a black cop impersonating a white KKK follower premiered at the Cannes Film Festival (and acv covered its Red Carpet entrance there) last year and the film has been commercially successful too.

Peter Farrelly’s ‘Green Book’, a film about a black pianist hiring a white driver to chauffeur him to concerts in the segregated south of the US in the 1960s, has got four nominations.

Mahershala Ali, who appears in ‘Green Book’ is among the nominees for best supporting actor; while Viola Davis is recognised in the leading actress category for her role in Steve McQueen’s opening London Film Festival ‘Widows’.

Elsewhere on the diversity front, Lakeith Stanfield, the star of breakout hit, ‘Sorry to bother you’ gets a nomination in the EE Rising Star category – in which the public can vote. So too does Letitia Wright, one of the stars of ‘Black Panther‘.

More generally, Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘The Favourite’ leads the way with nominations in 12 categories, while Alfonso Cuarón’s ‘Roma’ and Damian Chazelle’s ‘First Man’ gets seven; ‘Vice’, starring Brit Christian Bale and made by Adam McKay, has six.

Another film that scored well with four nominations is Pawel Pawlikowski’s ‘Cold War’, which is a BFI-funded feature as is Lynne Ramsay’s ‘You were never really here’ in the outstanding British film category; and Michael Pearce’s film set in Jersey, ‘Beast’ also gets a nod in the same category. Pearce is also a nominee in the outstanding British writer/director/producer debut category. In this section, two other BFI backed projects appear, ‘Apostosy’ by Daniel Kokotajlo and ‘Ray & Liz’ by Richard Billingham.

The 72nd Baftas will take place at the Royal Albert Hall on February 10 and be hosted by TV star Joanna Lumley.
