First up the movies too see this month…
“Interstellar” – Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, and Christopher Nolan are bringing us, it has been said, the most anticipated movie of the year.
It is of course, “Interstellar”. If you have seen adverts for this movie, nothing was given away and as we came closer to the release more was revealed. If you are someone who does not like to hear anything about movies beforehand, do not watch any of the trailers, and don’t read the reviews because a lot of people have given this 5/5.
This is a movie that has to be watched in the cinema, because it’s shot in that way – and Nolan has not let us down with what he has put on the screen. I have not seen a bad Christopher Nolan film, there are some favourites there. I can safely say this is BOOM.
Sunny trailer rating: ‘Interstellar’ ***** (out of five) rocket ships.
“Paddington” – This month, I am going back to my childhood again – because a little bear from Peru has been lost and he likes marmalade sandwiches. If you are reading this and you don’t know who it is about, you are going to be introduced to Paddington Bear and you’re in for a bit of a treat. The trailers are cute, entertaining and fun. This is definitely one for the kids and I like it being put on the big screen. It’s not a real bear – it’s animated.
Sunny trailer rating: *** marmalade sandwiches
“The Imitation Game” – This is one British movie tipped for the Oscars due to its performances – there’s Benedict Cumberbatch, Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong and Charles Dance.
It’s set in England and it’s another war movie – it’s not surprising that it’s come out at this time. Interesting film as it is based on the true story of Alan Turing who saved more lives than anyone else during World War 2 and yet he was persecuted for being homosexual which back then was illegal in the UK.
Watch the movie and see what happens to him, if you don’t know about his story it is heart wrenching as he was a Genius who was wrongfully persecuted. From the trailer it looks really intense. If you’re looking for a good performance film, this is the one to watch. If you want to see some proper good acting – these are from the best in our acting stables.
Sunny trailer rating: ***
And now to the films I recommended you saw last month, my reviews of those films…
“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” – Gangster. It’s been an amazing month for me in the cinema this last month and one of the reasons is that one of my favourite heroes from childhood made it to the big screen – in the form of “Teenage Mutant Turtles”. I was a big fan of these guys when they first came out and I am a big fan of them now. This movie only got me more excited. It was the most entertaining movie for me and young adults – the characters came through for me really nicely.
It wasn’t a story that was too far-fetched, the film makers kept it as close to the original as possible. And the action sequences were brilliant. The turtles looked amazingly real, everything about this movie was great.
I am so glad they are planning two more of these flims however they have got to keep up to this standard. The problem with the producers (led by Michael Bay) is that they are the ones who gave us “Transformers”. The first was amazing, and brilliant, but after that I have not seen a “Transformers” film that I have really enjoyed.
They have the visual effects and the technology – it was a big blockbuster of a movie and all that kind of stuff – but the actual “Transformers” film (after the first) doesn’t hold your attention for very long.
This is the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie – it’s brilliant – I just hope the standard will be there. I hope they work very closely with the guys from the comic book and take some more advice from them – if it keeps true to its origins and be like Marvel, (“Iron Man“, “Spider-Man“, “Hulk“) they will have a real windfall here.
Sunny rating: ***** (out of five)
“The Judge” – Robert Duvall and Robert Downey Junior are one of our generations’ best actors and putting them in a movie together was a stroke of genius.
It is about a father and son relationship – what I found in the movie is that it was a bit more than that – more about family, togetherness, and where your family takes you – all these questions are posed within the dynamic of these two characters.
It’s borderline independent (not like a blockbuster studio film), and if you miss it in the cinema, it’s no big deal, I think it’s one of those films you can sit in front of the TV and enjoy. I think the ladies will cry.
Sunny rating: ***
“Fury” – This was the closing night film of last month’s London Film Festival (October 8-19) and they had a red carpet gala screening.
This is Brad Pitt’s latest outing – in a World War 2 film. He came down and he had some of the war veterans on the red carpet, and it was a really, really personal film (for him). It is the 70th anniversary (of the end of the Second World War and this film is set at near the end of the war, as the Allies invade Germany).
This is the right time for this film. It is going to be one of the ones that we are going to see in the Oscars.
It’s about a group of lads, run by their commander, who is Brad Pitt and about how with their tanks, they hold the Germans back and the courage that they show.
Not everyone enjoys a war movie but it is definitely one of those films that we are going to appreciate.
War is not glorified – it is not a place you want to go to. It’s horrible – and that is what you see in this movie and the decisions they have to make – you really do feel for them.
Sunny rating: **** tanks
