Centred around the love travails of Pia (Simone Ashley) when her younger sister Sonal (Anoushka Chadha) is getting married, Pia is told by a clairvoyant, she will find the love of life within five dates.
And so, everyone plots to make her go on these dates.
Her mother – Laxmi is played by Sindhu Vee and Asim Chaudhry plays one of the suitors, a mega wealthy Mumbai raised tycoon, Sid. Other stars who appear in the film are Nikesh Patel (‘Starstruck’) who plays another one of Pia’s dates as the square Akshay and Kulvinder Ghir as Pandit Rbs Fugga.
Sindhu Vee is well known her for comedy and stand-up and plays mother Laxmi, while Anoushka Chadha makes her feature film breakthrough as Pia’s younger sister, Sonal. Writer Nikita Lalwani and director Prarthana Mohan talk about what they wanted to do with this film which is adapted from the story, ‘Five Blind Dates’ which takes place in the Chinese origin community living in Australia.
Lawlani won the Desmond Elliott Prize for her first novel, ‘Gifted’ and her latest is ‘You People’ (2021). She has also more recently written for Stephen Merchant and his TV Show, ‘The Outlaws’ and is working on adaptations of her books for the screen.
Mohan was born in Chennai and hails from an illustrious family and is the granddaughter of renowned composer MS Viswanathan and it was he who introduced her to film with stories of the people he had met in the industry. She trained in the US and her first feature ‘The Miseducation of Bindu’ was produced by the Duplass Brothers and won numerous awards. She has also made ‘Christmas is Cancelled’ and ‘The Christmas Break’ which takes place in Ireland and is an ensemble comedy with Justin Long and India Mullen in prominent roles.
