LFF 2024 – ‘All We Imagine as Light’ – Payal Kapadia Cannes Grand Prix winning film comes to London… (video) latest listings too

Writer-director talks languages, migration, Mumbai, monsoon and her reflections on her Cannes experience…

PAYAL KAPADIA’S second film, ‘All We Imagine as Light’ comes to London Film Festival (October 9-20) next week and it is the first time British audiences will get a chance to see this Cannes 2024 Grand Prix winning film from India and in part about Mumbai and the Maharashtra coastal town of Ratnagiri.
All We Imagine as Light’ played in Cannes in May to great acclaim and had already achieved something in being selected for Competition – an Indian film had not appeared in Official Competition at Cannes since ‘Swaham’ by Shaji N Karun in 1994 and ‘All We Imagine as Light’ broke the barrier and arguably her Cannes Competition entry was aided and abetted by her 2021 Golden Eye award for the best documentary and her first film, ‘A Night of Knowing Nothing’ which is a hybrid, mixing fact and fiction imaginatively and ostensibly about riots and anti-government protests that began at her college in Pune, The Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in 2015.
In May, Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally commended Kapadia for her accolade – the first time an Indian filmmaker had been recognised with a leading prize since ‘Neecha Nagar’ by Chetan Anand (http://asianculturevulture.com/portfolios/kamini-kaushal-bollywood-dame/) in 1946 – the first ever Cannes.
In this interview, Kapadia talks to Sailesh Ram, the editor of www.asianculturevulture.com about the subject of the film and its many themes.
Centred around two migrant nurses both from Kerala (Prabha – Kani Kusruti and Anu – Divya Prabha) who live and work in Mumbai, the flatmates take a trip to the seaside with colleague Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam).
