Cannes 2022 – Cannes Classic, Thamp̄ – Actors Jelaga & Devi Nair

NOT MANY people may be familiar with this film – Thamp̄ (‘The Circus Tent’).
Produced in Malayalam, it premiered in 1978 and was made by one of the most prominent filmmakers at the time – the late Govindan Aravindan, better known as G Aravindan.
The film was selected to have its world premiere as a completely remastered and refurbished film – (“It looks even better than the original,” says Jelega in our interview) in Cannes and is now likely to travel to other film festivals around the world.
Watch the video to learn more about this fascinating film which is essentially about a circus troupe visiting a village in Kerala – and was shot in a cinéma-vérité style (ie there wasn’t too much of a script and some of the villagers are simply themselves).
Jelega has resumed her acting career after a break and has appeared most noticeably in the hit Fahadh Faasil starrer, ‘Malik’. Her daughter Devi (in this video too) is just making her way and talks about her latest role in sound editor Oscar-winning (‘Slumdog Millionaire’) Resul Pookutty’s first film as a director, ‘Otta – The Loner’.
